Asbestos Location Equipment in Real Time

EU FP7

A.L.E.R.T. – Asbestos Location Equipment in Real Time

What is the ALERT Project? The project is led by a consortium of leading European Universities and Businesses dedicated to the development of cutting edge technology that will produce the world's 1st real-time portable detector of lethal airborne asbestos fibres.

Currently in the advanced stages of development, The Alert Project aims to launch a range of products in 2013 for manufacture and global distribution by The Select Group, the consortium's Exploitation Manager and originator of the project.

Short-listed 9th in 2008 out of 3,500 entries the ALERT Project is part of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

Why is the Alert Project so vitally important?

  • Asbestos, one of the world’s most deadly industrial toxins, is most lethal when its fibrous nature is disturbed and the airborne fibres are inhaled
  • Banned from use in the UK in 1999 there is still a massive legacy in the UK as most buildings constructed prior to that date will contain asbestos is some form
  • Banned completely in the EU in 2005, there are over 25,000 deaths per year attributed to asbestos exposure
  • Asbestos is predicted to kill 100,000 people per year worldwide over the next 20 years (= 2,000,000 people over 20 years worldwide)
  • Still exported from Canada to developing countries such as India, China and South America the threat of asbestos is a global problem and one that will take generations to deal with whilst claiming millions of victims in the process
  • Currently, there is no known instrument in existence which pro-actively detects and warns against the presence of asbestos fibres in the air in real time
